The French Fiction group runs on the first, third and fifth Monday of the month, from 1.30 to 3 pm. We take it in turns to read aloud and translate French fiction that is easier and shorter than ‘classic’ French literature. This is a fun way of brushing up rusty language and expanding vocabulary. In the last 20 minutes or so, we divide up into pairs for some light French conversation on everyday topics.
Our book for 2026 will be the recent thriller Est-ce que les hommes jugent ainsi? by Mathieu Menegaux.
We manage about 6 pages a session. Missing occasional sessions would not be a problem – all you need then do is read ahead to catch up. After each session, I email everyone in the group about where exactly we have got to in the book.
If you’ve been using your French actively at any time since school (e.g. other French groups, evening classes, time in France), this book may well be a suitable read for you. Rusty A-level would be perfect. The group provides a great opportunity to practise French in a supportive and convivial environment.
There will be a group charge (see below) to cover room hire. This will be collected at the beginning of each term.
We will aim to get through one work of fiction per year (3 terms). For longer works, we will occasionally read passages at home in order to make good progress, e.g. during the long summer break. Generally, I will source all copies of each book for the group in bulk at cost (Kindle versions excepted). Book costs will work out at only around £10 per calendar year for you.
Looking ahead, we will aim for critically acclaimed novels at the easier end of the spectrum, and thus easier for us to translate ‘on the hoof’. Potential future choices are listed on the link below (Future French Fiction Choices). Initially we will focus on short modern novels.
If you think that this group might work for you, please contact the Group Convenor, Bruce, via the blue envelope email icon. There is currently one space available in this popular group.
