Our short term aim:
Whether they are part of this group or not, many u3a members feel the need to write at least part of their life experiences, for members of their families. They might have felt galvanised by a request from a close family member, perhaps a grandchild.
Our long-term aim is to explore different writing styles and discover our own. So far we have emphasised the writing of short stories, and discovered the style that comes naturally to each of us. We have found that stories from real life come easily, and we have all enjoyed writing these and listening to fascinating accounts of others’ lives and experiences.
Recently, we have begun to experiment with our different styles and are encouraged to branch out into a different genre, a way of writing that doesn’t come naturally.
Here is a link for those who might be interested in reading further around the subject of writing.
The Creative Writing Coursebook: Forty-Four Authors Share Advice and Exercises for Fiction and Poetry (Paperback)
Julia Bell (author) and Paul Magrs (author).
It lists the latest in the world of writing; for example
‘The Panda, the Cat and the Dreadful Teddy: A Parody’ (Guess what it’s a parody of?)
