As local partners of the Royal Institute of Philosophy, over the next two years from 1st September 2024, we are being sponsored to hold events that encourage more people to take an interest in philosophy and to join in with our exploration of Philosophy.
The sponsored seminars take place at 10.30am, in the Methodist Church, on The Waits, the third Friday of the month (except in August and December). The pub visits and other visits are meant to be more informal and are used to illustrate particular issues found in the seminars. Please see the timetable of all events below, which is updated regularly.
The aim of the group, is to go over the most important philosophical ideas of the past and see how they have shaped our world. Those ideas focus on being. What kind of being are we and where are we heading? What kind of knowledge can we have? and fundamentally, what is the nature of knowledge? Why is there a universe and not nothing at all? am I really free? how do we fit into time and space? The study of philosophy has undergone a revival recently, as humanity grapples to understand AI and more importantly, the implications of our inventions. Now more than ever, it is important to remember our past, so that we may have a future.
Doing Philosophy should help us think critically about the ideas we come across daily from the TV and newspapers. Philosophy is thus more useful than people may suppose, helping us to see the sense, from the non-sense.
