This group is aimed primarily at visitors to France and anyone else interested in improving their knowledge of French. It is suitable for anyone who has studied the language for about 4 years - O-level plus some recent exposure to French (e.g. Duolingo, holidays in France) is not unusual for current group members. The group is currently full but you can join a waiting list.
The group is intended to be relaxed, friendly and fun, and we will find out about different aspects of French life and culture. Activities include listening, reading, translation and grammar, with conversation in twos and threes.
We use a variety of resources, some provided by the Group Convenor. There are 2 books to purchase, namely an inexpensive intermediate grammar workbook (just £5 new) to consolidate rusty basics and a recently published French course book (cost: about £25) aimed at adult learners at our level. We will carry on using these for another three years. For 2026-2027 only we will also use a volume of short stories aimed at intermediate learners (cost: about £7).
There will be some preparation to do between sessions. You will need access to a printer to print out materials, or alternatively an electronic device, e.g. iPad, to view them.
Sessions are held on the second and fourth Wednesday afternoons of the month, 1.30 to 3.00 pm.
You could come along to a free taster session to see if the group works for you.
If you would like a higher level of French, St Ives u3a also offers an Advanced French group and a French Fiction group - click on the Groups tab at the top of this page to find out more.
