French Intermediate 1 is aimed primarily at visitors to France and anyone else interested in improving their knowledge of French. It is suitable for anyone who has studied the language for about 4 years, including in the past (GCSE/O-level plus Duolingo/holidays in France would be ideal).

The group is intended to be relaxed, friendly and fun, and we will find out about different aspects of French life and culture. Activities include listening, reading, translation, grammar and conversation.

We use a variety of resources, some provided by the Group Convenor. There are 2 books to purchase, namely an inexpensive intermediate grammar workbook (just £5 new) to consolidate rusty basics and a recently published French course book (cost: about £25) aimed at adult learners at our level. We will carry on using these for another three years. For 2026-2027 only we will also use a volume of short stories aimed at intermediate learners (cost: about £7).

There is currently no group charge as the venue is free.

There will be some preparation to do between sessions. You will need access to a printer to print out materials, or alternatively an electronic device with a reasonable screen (e.g. iPad) to view them.

Sessions are held on the first and third Wednesday afternoon of the month (1.30 to 3.00 pm). All dates are set out at the foot of this page. We take a break in the warmer months..

The group is currently full but you can join a waiting list. If you would like a higher level of French or some fiction in French, St Ives u3a also offers an Advanced French group and a French Fiction group (click on the Groups tab at the top of this page).
