March 2025 Trip - Lackford Lakes and Cavenham Heath

March 26, 2025

Our trip to Lackford Lakes and Cavenham Heath this year was a bit earlier in the season than when we visited last year. So it was not surprising that although the sun was shining and there was little wind, some of the migrants had not yet arrived.

Six members attended and enjoyed the sunshine and the good selection of birds on view.

From memory the birds seen at Lackford were Shelduck, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Cormorant, Little Egret, Gadwall, Lapwing, Black-headed Gull, Mute Swan, Teal, Wigeon, Nuthatch, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Marsh Tit, Dunnock, Chiffchaff, Wren, Marsh Harrier, Common Buzzard, Red Kite, Wood Pigeon, Possible Stock Dove, Carrion Crow and Jackdaw.

We also heard but didn’t see Cetti’s Warbler and Green Finch.

I may well have missed some and as I didn’t make a list on the day that’s entirely possible.

Other highlights included Muntjac feeding from the photo posing log in front of us and a few rabbits.

At Cavenham , we were disappointed by the Stone curlews as six were reported but didn’t show for us. However, there were plenty of Stonechats and we heard a Woodlark singing but again without showing itself. Other birds on the heath included Rooks and Jackdaws.

As we left, I met a man who insisted he’d heard two Nightingales along the lane but I didn’t find them and it would have been very early in the season for them to be on site.

All in all, a classic birdwatching day. Conditions were perfect but our species count was rather low. I hope some of you got nice pictures of the Nuthatch and Marsh Tit not to mention the Muntjac on the photo log.
