The Marriage Portrait is set in 16th century Italy when females were without any rights and “owned” by their parents, brothers and husbands. Maggie O Farrell knows how to write historical details in depth. This appealed to some members of the group more than others. The opening chapter was excellent even though it told you how it ends it set up an interesting story. Most of the group felt the end was unrealistic.
