The main feedback from the group was the terrible disaster at Aberfan the book covered, for some in the group it brought back memories of the time and for others, the details of the disaster were extremely harrowing.
There was significant discussion in regard to it being a book of its time; this included many aspects, William at 18, having just finished his course being allowed to go to Aberfan and then not receiving any support following, Williams mother lack of professional support having lost her husband with a small child, the relationship between Robert and Howard that was never really discussed; in fact, the lack of open communication in general at that time.
Whilst sympathetic to William, there was also a 'frustration' in the group in regard to the consistent poor decision making by him which, whilst appreciating he felt others were better off with his not being there, there was no consideration from him as to how his actions impacted on others.
The ending was felt to be a little 'hurried' given his complex relationship with his mother; within '5 minutes' of being together he was walking her down the aisle!
That said many in the group found it a truly worthwhile read and this was reflected in the scoring of 8.3; our highest so far!
