WAITING LIST ONLY
This is a 2-hour 'pop-up' workshop for fully and partially retired members of St Ives U3A who are interested in learning about how a knowledge of existentialism can help them to enhance their lives in retirement.
Participants
The workshop is suitable for participants with little or no prior knowledge or understanding of existentialism, but there is an assumption that those present will have a curiosity about existential ideas and a willingness to participate in discussions and activities.
Content
There will be a brief review of some of the most relevant existential ideas of the key modern-day thinkers from the mid-1800s to the present day. We will discuss existentialism's core ideas and consider how we might apply these ideas in our own lives.
We will also debate such questions as:
- Can retirement act as a catalyst for re-evaluating life's purpose?
- How can we live life more meaningfully following the end of our working lives?
- Can uncertainty and change be liberating?
Depending on time constraints, we will undertake one or two activities to help those who wish to make changes, moving forward.
Further information
- A reading list will be provided for those participants wishing to study the subject further in their own time.
- Some suggestions for home-based activities will be provided for those wishing to apply the existential ideas to their own lives.
- Should sufficient interest in existentialism be generated by the workshop, it is likely that a monthly U3A group would be established in the autumn of 2026 (date, time and venue to be decided).
