This month we looked at some of the family owned shops which have disappeared.
We started with Barton's the chemist which remained in family hands for almost 120 years and is now the Oxfam shop. We then looked at Kiddle's furniture store and Bryants Outfitters. The shop front of Anderson's the butcher on the Waits is still there but few members knew of its history. In Rustons, 2 employees were killed in 1898 when a case of gunpowder exploded. Deeres newsagents and cafe was well remembered along the Broadway. A descendant told us about Clements shop on Market Hill and how the family's living area is now part of the convenience store next to the Property Vault. Most recently we have lost Wadsworth's Wine and Spirit shop on the Broadway and we looked at how John Wadsworth started as an aerated water manufacturer by the river. We finished with Huntingdonshire's 'Arkwright' - Tony Rowell of Bluntisham.
Happy Memories!
