This month we enjoyed a talk on Bluntisham Rectory by Liz Eddy. She began by telling us about her personal connection with the Rectory before focussing on some of the rectors who have lived there starting with Dr. Knight who built the original house. The Rev. Baines undertook an extensive restoration of the building and he arranged to install the doorway of the Old Slepe Hall which was being demolished. The daughter of Canon Rumpf described her work in the parish in a book entitled "Clerical Workshops". But the most famous resident of the Rectory was Dorothy L. Sayers when her father was rector from 1897 - 1917. In 1920 the Rev. Edward Peake arrived. He is a well known ornithologist who wrote an article for the Victoria County History.
In 1977 the Church of England sold the building after the death of the Rev. John Eddy. There was a collection of newspaper articles and books on the Table of Delights which included items on the unveiling of the plaque to Dorothy L. Sayers and the fire when the jazz musician Chris Barber was the owner. There was also a copy of "Birds in a Rectory Garden" written by Edward Peake.
The meeting was very well attended and we even had to hunt for extra chairs!
